This will be my last InsaneJournal entry. You can still find my original blog at its original location. LiveJournal may not be perfect--not even close--but the management does seem at least somewhat more responsive. More importantly, nearly all the feedback I have ever received has been from LJ users, so at the risk of blatantly pandering to a friendly home audience, I plan to blatantly pander to a friendly home audience. See you there!

It turns out I can record audiobooks from home. There's this site called LibriVox that organizes volunteers to record public domain works. It's strictly pro bono, but in addition to looking good on a rookie voice actor's resume, it will contribute to the selection of works available to audiobook users. This to me is a good thing.

| The John McCain Blog: A Treasure Trove Of Unintentional Hilarity |
[Aug. 20th, 2008|07:54 pm] |
Part One of Many
So after Michael Goldfarb's inane commentary on gamers and his semigluteal apology, I thought I'd check out the John McCain campaign blog to see if I could find a few more laughs.

I was not disappointed.
Ladies and gentlemen, I can only assume one of two things:
1) McCain's campaign staff has hired as consultants Salvador Dalí, Alfred Jarry, and Ben Edlund;
2) They're trying to lull us jokesters into a false sense of security.
I have to think it might be 2), if only because we haven't seen them put up a photo of George W. Bush with the tagline, "Hey, We've Done Worse."

Not too long ago in this very blog, I called for an end to name-calling in the United States Presidential campaign.
Then McCain presidential campaign advisor Michael Goldfarb posted this.

| An Open Letter to my Congressthings |
[Aug. 18th, 2008|07:43 pm] |
I am writing this message to urge you to support the efforts of Rep. Howard Berman, from California's 28th District, and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) in reforming patent, trademark, and copyright issues, especially regarding Internet music.
Pandora, an online music streaming service where I discover new artists--and where I hope to someday stream my own music to new listeners--may have to shut down under current royalty rates set by the Copyright Review Board last year at the behest of SoundExchange, a copyright clearinghouse and lobbying arm of the Recording Industry Association of America. Under the new rates, Internet-based radio stations must pay royalties on a per-listener basis. Satellite radio stations pay much lower rates, and terrestrial radio pays nothing at all (and rumors persist that RIAA labels in fact pay them). Even though SoundExchange wants terrestrial radio to pay too, their rates will be much lower, since there is no way to tally the exact number of users to levy a per-user royalty. Simply put, SoundExchange should be investigated for unfair restraint of trade for its discrimination against Internet radio, and if necessary, indicted in Federal court. In the short term, however, I believe Rep. Berman's attempt at compromise legislation will at least prevent the RIAA from destroying Internet radio in order to preserve its unfair control over the mainstream music industry.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely, Me

From filkertom via hitchkitty:
The Omnivore's Hundred is a list of foods the gastronomic Andrew Wheeler thinks everyone should try at least once in their lives.
The rules of the meme: Bold those you have tried.
Strikethrough those you wouldn't eat on a bet. Italicize any item you'll never eat again. Asterisk any items you'd be interested in trying but have not yet.*
I'm hacking this meme! That's just the sort of guy I am. Underline any item you enjoy frequently, or would love to have again.

| | "Friend Like Me," Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, from Disney's "Aladdin" | ] |
In today's world, we are all both public and private figures to some extent. The specifics vary on circumstances and, yes, choice of career. Even though one generally has extremely limited reasonable expectations of privacy in a public place, for instance, that reasonable expectation varies even further if one is, say, an actor or other public figure. As such, if you have a TV show, you can reasonably expect to be asked for autographs, photos, etc. However, NFL Hall-of-Famer Jim Brown has sued EA and Sony (though neither Microsoft nor Nintendo were named) for using his "likeness" in Madden NFL games, while World Poker Tournament contestants content that they were forced to waive rights to profit from the use of their likenesses in computer games and other revenue sources. It may be time to define clear and fair rules for control over the use of one's likeness.
